GDO White measured distance >1.9m is wrong

I installed my GDO White (v1?) last November (and integrated it into HA) and it was working as expected for awhile. However, I recently noticed that it was not giving the correct open/closed status.

It’s running ESPHome Version 2024.10.2. I used a small piece of plywood to simulate the garage door and noticed that it reads the distance correctly as I lower the plywood UNTIL it gets more than 1.86m away from the ceiling. At that point, it shows NA for a bit and then it flips to numbers in the 0.04m range!

So, when that garage door is closed (not blocking the sensor at all), the sensor thinks it’s very close (0.06m) so it shows the OPEN status incorrectly.

Here’s a screenshot of the GDO’s page with the door closed. It should be reading around 2.5m.

The sensor is likely catching edges of the enclosure when nothing else is in its range. See this article for steps to resolve: Troubleshooting the Garage Door Opener optical laser range sensor

Ha - thanks for the clue (and fast response too)!

I got up to take a close look at the sensor and a spider had apparently been up in that area. Used a tooth pick and leaf blower to clean it all out and it started showing NA again. It’s now back to working as expected again.

Thanks!

I had issues with spiders with mine a few times and finally changed it to use a wired sensor instead and it has been perfect since.
