So I just pulled the trigger on GDO BlaQ for my 2004 Craftsman garage door opener.!
I had like most of us bought MYQ device that was pretty much useless since they locked down with a monthly subscription. So basically only good to control garage door and know the status. That’s it, no automations possible.
Installation wasn’t straight forward. Instructions are perfectly clear and well written. I used Konnected app to add GDO Blaq , i connected to WiFi network ok but then i was stuck in a loop on the page where it is searching for device on my network to add it…even though it says ‘all set’. It wouldn’t add GDO Blaq to my Konnected app. A quick internet search and I fell on a recommendation by Nate to reboot the phone. I did and magic the device appeared in my Konnected app with my other konnect devices.
Installation took less than 10 minutes, 2 wires, double sided tape, plug device in and done.
I refreshed connected service in smartthings and GDo Blaq device appeared. I can now use it for automations, to control light open/close , door open/close, choose percentage to open . And there are also option to connect additional sensors if you want, but not needed in my case.
3 Questions.
Question1: I can no longer control the toggle button for the lights on my wall Craftsman controller , only open/close door toggle works . Is this done on purpose so not to turn off the power to GDO Blaq? Or did I do something wrong? I think it’s still useful to be able to control manually the light with button, or I have to set rules to turn off light after a long period of time if I need to work in the garage for long time.
Question 2: when I set up the device i was able to connect to the device through Konnected app with IP address , but now it says ‘this site can’t be reached’. Once set up I don’t think I need to connect to the device anymore to change anything…but I just wanted to ask.
Question 3; Everytime I go into my device in smartthings I get an error message for 2 seconds saying this device hasn’t updated all of its information status check again later…it’s a little annoying any setting I need to change?
Besides that everything works like a charm. Great addition to any smart home set up.
I am not sure exactly when it started for me but I am seeing the same connection errors as above. I have 3 openers and I can no longer access the device web page for any of them from within the app or from a browser. I have tried rebooting the devices, etc.
I have both alarm panel and GDO blaQ opener devices all showing the blue checkmarks within the app.
Interestingly I can still access the alarm panel web pages. Not sure if its relevant but from within the app the alarm panels are displaying in the format ip address:port (i.e. 111.111.11.111:11111) whereas my openers are only displaying ip address (i.e. 111.111.11.111).
I had rebuilt and updated the firmware on all my GDO blaQ opener devices. When doing so I did not pay attention and when rebuilding the firmware the Local Web Page/api setting defaulted to Disabled where it was previously Enabled. I rebuilt the firmware again with this setting enabled and solved my issue.
A little misleading that the rebuild flipped my previous setting but I should also have paid closer attention.
I am not using any local automations. I am using smarthings. So everything is on the cloud. If I want to access GDo Blaq web page do I need to enable local API ?
If it’s by design it’s not very good. I had to by a separate button to control it manually. A little annoying and counter intuitive…it’s the only con to this unit.
On the older analog wall buttons, the light and lock secondary buttons do unfortunately become disabled when a GDO blaQ is connected. This is because the GDO blaQ essentially emulates a digital wall button, and Chamberlain/Liftmaster’s digital protocol technically cannot co-exist with the analog protocol.
So, if you have a Security+1.0 garage opener with an analog wall button, and need your light and lock physical buttons back, the best solution is to upgrade the wall button to the 889LM digital wall panel.
Can you confirm that the disabling of the secondary buttons occurs regardless of the way the GDO blaQ is wired? I used the “Mounting Option 2” from the install guide and I can confirm that my Chamberlain secondary wall buttons no longer work.
I think I’m also experiencing the same issue. If I have a Liftmaster opener with a red button/security+ 1.0 and a 98LM wall panel, do I need to replace the wall panel with an 889LM to get my light/lock buttons and motion sensor to work?
I just installed a new blaQ with ESPHome 2025.12.2 and project version 1.5.6.1 and now my wall button will only open/close. The light and lock buttons don’t work and the motion sensor on the wall panel doesn’t work. No events show in the logs when I push them. Sometimes it takes two wall button taps to open/close. The other interesting thing I noticed is the device web page says “Off” for the motion sensor, but Home Assistant says its state is “Unknown”. I’m wired in on the ceiling by the opener itself.
Could the firmware be tweaked on your end to get this to work? Let’s say we use “Mounting Option 2: Near the Wall Button” and also the “Optional: Pass-Thru Wiring”? If the light button is pressed on the physical wall panel, it goes to the blaQ which intercepts it, and the blaQ then sends the correct digital signal to the blaQ to turn on the light?
I seems only one wall panel can communicate to the opener in general, so can the physical wall panel at least talk to the blaQ and then the blaQ can then pass things along?
I know I am probably oversimplifying things and it might not be possible, but it’s just a thought.
Also, isn’t the 889LM a Security+2.0 wall panel? Would that still work on a Security+1.0 garage door opener like my 2004 Craftsman with a square red/orange learn button?
You can disable the Local Native API, no need for that if you just use SmartThings. As for Local Web Page / API, you should keep that one active to still be able to see the device’s web page.
For the site cannot be reached issue, I had the same thing till I realized that another device on my network took over that IP address assigned to the blaQ. Go into your router settings and set a reserved static IP address for the blaQ and you should not have those issues anymore.
For me, the first IP address taken by the blaQ seems to stick even through multiple firmware updates and reboots. The blaQ wants to keep that same initial address for all time it seems. I could be wrong, but that’s what was happening to me. After I realized I just gave it a static IP and have not had that issue again.
Ok i enabled it on alexa app and put a 4 digit # and still won’t work Also when I had a Nexx Garage the button on my keypad did open and close the light there must be a way Nate can fix this issue doesn’t make sence to close light always from konnected app it use to close automatically or push button on keypad
Yes, the 98LM is an analog wall button, and one limitation of the Security+ digital protocol is that it can’t co-exist with the analog controls. Replacing the 98LM with the 889LM, which is a digital wall control, will allow you use the additional buttons on the wall control again.
Yeah, the analog motion sensor won’t work either, sorry.
No, it doesn’t work that way. The terminals are literally pass-thru (they’re electrically connected to each other) so the blaQ can’t “intercept” the signal. Also the blaQ doesn’t interpret those analog button pushes at all, it’s strictly digital.
Typically IP assignments are controlled by your router/DHCP, but yes, usually it will try to keep the same IP address for the duration of the DHCP lease.
It looks like it’s available directly from LiftMaster here or from AARTech here.
The only other workaround, if you want to keep the full capability of the analog wall button, is to not use a digital control. You could swap the GDO blaQ for our GDO White on a Security+1.0 opener. The GDO White uses an analog dry-contact trigger to open/close the door, but then you will lose the light, lock and other digital controls that are available in the GDO blaQ.
I installed GDO Black 1. My remote in the car to open garage won’t work anymore do i have to reprogram i have Craftsman Learn button Red or is it disabled because I installed gdo black
2. I linked Alexa to konnected i enabled everything and put a 4 digit number to activate but when I push to open it shows opening and closing but it actually not opening garage door anybody have same problem could this be fixed in Alexa app
