Do you need an 889LM? Notes about Blaq with new jack shaft opener

Want an 889LM? I have an extra that I no longer need. Send me a note.

TL;DR comments about my garage door opener journey.

I previously made my own esphome based garage door unit with a couple reed switches at each end of the garage door traveler, some magnets adhered to the traveler, and a dry contact relay to raise / lower the garage door - a craftsman with a red button, manufactured 09/04. The open reed switch was unreliable, but otherwise the unit was great! But I started getting errors on the obstruction sensors on the craftsman, so I replaced them, that helped maybe a little.

I discovered the ratgdo project and then the Blaq, and replaced my homemade esphome unit with the Blaq. It sort of worked, but I learned that I would need the 889LM to get more capabilities, so I bought one.

Here is my first bullet point: When the Blaq detects it is an old protocol, it should report only its limited capabilities to esphome in home assistant, not the capabilities of Security+ 2.0 - don’t know if that’s possible - only a couple status points are actually valid on the red button units.

Recently the craftsman started stopping when halfway open, and knowing its age and after trying to grease the screw lift without any real improvement I started looking around. Menards had the RJO101 on sale for $420, so I jumped at that.

The difference with the RJO101 is astounding, what a nice unit.

Anyway, the RJO101 came with a wall unit that appears to be the chamberlain version of the 889LM so I used that one. But it had no outside keypad and only one remote. (chamberlain must expect that users use the MyQ app instead of remotes, I guess.)

I found a seller on ebay who had an outside keypad, remote opener for other car, and an 882LM which may or may not be useful to an interested party.

One comment about the new chamberlain units - the obstruction sensor status lights are much brighter than prior versions.

The obstruction sensor does not show as obstructed in home assistant until I try to close the door. Is it normal that the Blaq does not see the obstruction until it would have any meaning for the garage door operation?

Let me know if you want the 889LM for your own project and we can discuss how to find a new home for it.

Hey - @user395 - do you need the 889LM - I don’t have level necessary to send direct message, but you might. DM me if interested.

Hi there user306 - I already purchased an 889LM. Thanks though!

(for anyone else who might be wondering, yes, it fixed all the problems I was having. The only limitations now are those inherent with Security+ 1.0 i.e. no motor status, no door open/close count).
