Matter (beta) updates! GDO blaQ, GDO White and Alarm Panel Pro now with experimental Matter firmware

We’ve been making steady progress on Matter compatibility and with the latest Konnected App update we now have experimental Matter firmware for all three of our newest products: GDO blaQ, GDO White, and Alarm Panel Pro.

Yesterday we released an Konnected app update that enables discovery and configuration of all three of these devices. If you’re ready to give Matter a try on your GDO or Alarm Panel Pro, first make sure you update the Konnected app to version 1.6.5 or later from your device’s app store.

I’ve also updated documentation on the Matter commissioning and setup process for each device:

  1. Matter on the GDO blaQ
  2. Matter on the GDO White
  3. Matter on the Alarm Panel Pro

Everyone who has previously signed up for our Matter EAP has been granted access to the beta. Make sure you’re signing in to the Konnected app with the same email address used when submitting the EAP application.

To get started with Matter, head to install.konnected.io in your desktop browser (Chrome or Edge) and select the Matter firmware for your device to re-flash it. Then, you can add the Matter device in your Matter-compatible hub/controller of your choice. After that, it should be discoverable in the Konnected app under the Matter menu item for configuration.

A few notes and nuances in this latest Matter compatibility update:

  1. The Alarm Panel Pro now supports Contact Sensor, Switch, and Temperature Sensor zone types.
  2. The garage door openers will show up to Matter as a “window covering” … this is because the Matter specification does not yet have a garage opener closure type. We expect to update this if and when an actual garage opener type is available.
  3. The GDO blaQ also exposes a light control that controls the garage opener light.
  4. We’ve tested with Apple Home, Google Home and SmartThings as Matter controllers. Our devices will NOT work with Homey because Homey doesn’t accept un-certified Matter devices. Let us know if you try with any other platforms and how it works!

Looking forward to your feedback. Please use this thread/forum for Matter related questions and comments.

If we already flashed Matter firmware, what’s the process to flash the new firmware? Do we need to remove it from the matter controller, flash it, and re-add it? This is for the GDO blaQ.

There is an over the air update process, but it needs to be done via command line at this time. I will write some documentation for this tomorrow

I may have confounded the system. I used email address A when logging into the app, but email address B when I signed up for the EAP (at least, that’s where the “you’ve been granted access” email was sent).

I’ve now submitted the EAP form for email A, and created an account with email B. But, neither of them seem to be surfacing the Matter discovery option in the app.

Any chance you’re going to re-process the EAP participants soon?

I have the pro panel working with the Matter firmware and a couple of circuits set to “contact closure”. When I try to set all 12 circuits to “contact closure” the panel does a reboot after which I can’t connect to it with the Konnected app, and it loses communications with HomeKit. The only fix I’ve found is to reflash the panel, redo setup in HomeKit, and again configure inputs to “contact closure”.

This happens repeatedly, I’ve probably tried about 10 times at this point to get all 12 inputs set to contact closure. I’ve tried doing a few at a time, and also doing them all at once, same results. I think the max I got to was 9 inputs changed to contact closure.

Any suggestions on how to get this working?

Trying to get the Alarm Panel Pro working with Matter. Have tried Apple, SmartThings and Homey Pro. The latter does not pair up.

Panel Pro 12 contact sensors

Paired to SmartThings.

The Konnected app only adds 5 to 7 sensors when setting the 12 sensors to Contact Sensor.

The Konnected app shows that they are all set to Contact Sensor, but when you SAVE only some connect in SmartThings.

Then when you read the configuration in the Konnected app only the ones that made it to SmartThings show “Contact Sensor”, the others show “Disabled”.

Setting the “Disabled” one to “Contact Sensor” doesn’t enable them. Note: Once it did add one more, but generally it no longer adds.

The ones that made it to Smartings so far are working. If I open a window it reports. Same with closing.

I tried several times with Smartthings but in all cases best I could get is 7 sensors connected.

Then I changed to Apple, and best I can get there is 5, and they all show as OPEN which isn’t the case.

The good news in any case is that the Matter interfaces in both SmartThings and Apple have no issues pairing the bridge. Issue seems tied to the Konnected app and configuring the sensors and their route to SmartThings.

Installing the Matter firmware Sections on both the matter white and black directions reference connecting the alarm panel.

Secondly should the Blaq have the section on calibration of the optical sensor?

Any update on the OTA update instructions?

I’m having an issue in that I got the email I was accepted. Have one of the devices flashed and running Matter. But I don’t see the matter menu in the app when I’m logged in with my account.

Ben Have you resolved this? I also have my two alarm panel Pros, flashed with the matter firmware and connected them to HomeKit and they appear in the HomeKit Bridges list. I can even open the object in HomeKit, and Trun on Pairing mode which gives me an Accessory Ready to Connect and the setup code. But when I use the Konnected App neither of them show up n the Matter (beta) screen as it only displays Matter Pairing at the top, Knonnected Devices below that and then the long blue bar with Scan Again text on it. Im running the app on a iPad held 12 inches away from the two Alarm Panel Pros. When i look for Bluetooth devices using both the iPad and a MacBook, the two APPs do not show up. Is this normal? Should the Scan now scan the bluetooth or wifi networks to find the APPs.? thanks for any help

It uses Bluetooth to scan for Matter devices. You should NOT put it in pairing mode to discover/configure it in the Konnected app. Pairing mode is for commissioning to another Matter controller.

The Alarm Panel Pro should be comissioned to at least one Matter controller then scan in the Konnected app to access the device configuration via Bluetooth.

I have the two APP connected to HomeKit as Matter bridges so I seem to think the Matter firmware is loaded, But when I use the Konnected App neither of them show up n the Matter (beta) screen. How do I get them to show up so I can configure them ?

It should just show up in the Konnected app on the Matter screen (via Bluetooth). Here’s the documentation: Matter Support (Experimental) for the Alarm Panel Pro

If that doesn’t work let me know and we can debug more

They do not show up in the Konnected app. If they are bluetooth devices shouldn’t they show up as bluetooth devices in the systems setting of IOS, Mac/OS or my router, which is a Cisco Meraki with the other blue tooth devices?

I’m not sure if you should see them in system settings… but they should be discoverable with the NRFconnect app which is a free Bluetooth debugging utility.

@Ryan_P do you have an idea what could be happening here?

Sounds like the device isn’t advertising. Scanning with nrfConnect would prove that.

Ryan, Thanks for the note, but what dos the NRF connect app do that a Bluetooth monitor on a router would not? Is this possibly not standard bluetooth signal or protocol? I assume these are BLE. I’ll get the app later today and test. thanks for the help.

Ryan, the NRFconnect app seems to connect to the Alarm Panel Pro. See attached photo.

Im making headway. I saw a note one can only add matter devices using a Smartphone, iPhone or Google. Something to do with constant certifications of matter, which makes sense. I installed the Konnected app on my iPhone and it instantly found the two Alarm Panel Pros and asked for a Bluetooth pairing request. Wala!!! enter the default pairing code 123456 and it worked for both, then they stopped working. The one started working one did not. Of the one that works, only one contact closure works the other six do not. a they were fine with the non matter connection via the Konnected app.

Ah, that makes sense! What kind of device were you using originally if it was not a smartphone?
