I was one of the early adopters of the GDO and bought the v1 on pre-order when it was first announced as a Konnected product after having loved the Alarm Panel Pro using PoE for a while. What really sold me was the idea of using an optical sensor over the unreliable tilt sensors on most other brands’ garage door openers.
The GDO was easy and quick to install, but I’ve noticed the wifi signal is unreliable. I have a Wifi 6 router mesh network with one of my mesh nodes in the room next to the garage, so maybe 40 ft away from the GDO, through a wall.
I’ve noticed that 2.4GHz wifi devices are fairly unreliable in general, but most of the rest of my devices stay connected to my network most of the time. The GDO v1 on the other hand drops its connection usually once a day to once every two days, usually for 8-12 hours at a time, then automatically reconnects. It’s gotten to the point that I set up a Hubitat notification to alert me when the GDO’s network status changes away from and back to online so I’ll know whether or not my other routines that use the GDO will work.
I’m curious whether or not anyone else has seen this issue and what you’ve done to solve it. I know I could get a wifi extender setup in the garage, but that almost seems overkill.
I saw that the GDO v2 also uses the 2.4 GHz wifi band, but are there plans to build a GDO that uses the 5GHz range, or better yet, somehow find a way to fit a PoE NIC in the device?
I have not heard reports of similar problems, so I don’t think this is a common issue. I would like to know what firmware version you are running, and if possible can you capture any logs that indicate a reason for the WiFi disconnect?
I can’t think of why it would take 8-12 hours to reconnect. In case of WiFi disconnects, the device should re-connect within minutes.
It’s using the v1.1.4.1 firmware and ESPHome v2024.4.0. I was waiting to reply until it dropped the connection again so I could get logs, but that’s a challenge. The logs from the device’s webpage stopped scrolling when it disconnected of course, but didn’t show anything about the disconnect. The best I got was this
16:33:41 [D] [sensor:093]
‘WiFi Signal RSSI’: Sending state -54.00000 dBm with 0 decimals of accuracy
16:33:41 [D] [sensor:093]
‘WiFi Signal %’: Sending state 92.00000 % with 0 decimals of accuracy
16:33:42 [D] [vl53l0x:304]
‘Sensor distance’ - Distance is out of range, please move the target closer
16:33:42 [D] [sensor:093]
‘Sensor distance’: Sending state nan m with 2 decimals of accuracy
16:33:44 [D] [vl53l0x:304]
Those last two lines about the sensor continued until the logs stopped. My router logs weren’t much help either. Usually if I reboot my router the GDO will reconnect, but that didn’t work yesterday, until it randomly came back online 5 hours 11 mins later. Restarting the GDO has never worked from what I’ve seen.
I’d imagine getting into the console would get the logs I need, but of course it’s in my garage and it’s Summer in Texas, so I don’t want to leave a laptop connected to it for days on end, and I don’t want to move it in case the distance from the router has anything to do with this. I’m assuming it doesn’t though since the wifi strength always seems good until it just drops.
